KAMPALA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Indian Rahul Bharadwaj won the men's singles of the 2019 Uganda International Badminton Championship on Sunday night after beating Karl Gunnarsson of Iceland 22-24, 22-20, 21-17.
The unseeded player, who battled through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw, also defeated top seed Rosario Maddaloni of Italy on his way to the final at the Lugogo Arena.
He went on to stop Azerbaijan's Azmy Qowimuramadhoni 20-22, 21-17, 21-6.
"This is one of the greatest wins in my badminton career because I was not in the main draw, but managed to focus and win my games," Bharadwaj told Xinhua.
In the women's singles final Thet Htar Thuzar from Myanmar defeated Jordan's Domou Amro 21-14, 21-12.
The Nigerian pair of Godwin Olofua and Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori lifted the men's doubles title after seeing off Ahmed Salah and Saleh Siddharth of Egypt 21-18, 21-11.
The women's doubles final saw Egypt's Doha Hanny and Africa's top ranked player Hadia Hosny pick a 21-17, 12-21, 24-22 victory over Samin Abedkhojasteh (Iran) and Domou Amro (Jordan).
The pair from USA Howard Shu and Paula Lynn Obabano made sure they won the mixed doubles title 11-21, 21-11, 24-22 against another pair from USA of Vinson Chiu and Breanna Chi.
Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive Officer of Uganda badminton Association (UBA) thanked the foreign players for spicing the tournament.
"Having over 20 foreign players has helped our local players get the exposure," Mugabi told Xinhua.
